However, there are different stages after expiration, and the options available to you become more limited — and potentially more expensive — as time passes.

This guide explains what happens to your domain name, web hosting, and other services when they are not renewed on time.

1. Domain Name Expiration

Domain names have a specific expiration and recovery process.

Important: The exact grace, redemption and deletion periods can vary depending on the domain extension (.COM, .NG, .ORG, .AFRICA, etc.) and the registry/registrar. The timeline above represents TrophyHost's general domain-expiration process. Domain registries ultimately control the lifecycle of each extension.

2. The 30-Day Grace Period

Once your domain reaches its expiration date, you normally have a 30-day grace period to renew it.

During this period:

• You can renew the domain through your TrophyHost account.

• The normal domain renewal price generally applies.

• You should renew as soon as possible rather than waiting until the final day.

• Your domain is considered expired, even though it may still be recoverable.

Example

If your domain expires on 1 June:

1 June → 30 June

This is the 30-day grace period.

Renewing during this period gives you the best chance of recovering your domain at the normal renewal price.

3. After the 30-Day Grace Period: Redemption

If the domain is not renewed during the grace period, it may enter Redemption.

This is the final recovery stage before the domain is permanently deleted.

During redemption:

You may still be able to recover the domain, but it will cost more.

The amount payable will normally include:

Regular Renewal Fee + Redemption/Recovery Fee

The redemption fee exists because the registrar/registry must recover the domain from the redemption state.

For example:

Normal domain renewal: ₦30,000
Redemption fee: ₦X
Total recovery cost: ₦30,000 + ₦X

The actual redemption fee depends on the domain extension and registrar.

WHMCS supports separate redemption periods and additional redemption fees for domains that have passed their normal grace period.

4. The Domain Becomes Unrecoverable

The redemption period is not permanent.

If the domain is not recovered before the redemption period ends, it moves into the final deletion process.

At this stage:

The domain can no longer be renewed through TrophyHost.

It enters a Pending Delete state with the registry.

Once the pending-delete period finishes, the domain is released.

After release:

The domain becomes available for registration again.

At that point, anyone may be able to register it.

This means TrophyHost cannot guarantee that the previous owner will be able to get the domain back.

WHMCS documents the typical sequence as redemption followed by pending delete, which commonly lasts approximately 1–5 days before the domain is released.

5. The Complete Domain Timeline

A simple way to remember the process is:

0–30 DAYS — GRACE PERIOD

Renew at the normal renewal price.

REDEMPTION PERIOD

Recovery may still be possible, but an additional redemption fee applies.

The domain becomes available for registration again.

Someone else may register it.

6. What Happens to Web Hosting?

Hosting services follow a different process from domain names.

A hosting account does not normally remain available indefinitely after its due date.

Important

Hosting does not have the same 30-day domain grace period.

Hosting suspension and termination are controlled separately from domain expiration.

Once a hosting account is terminated, recovery of the account or its data may not be possible.

Customers should therefore renew their hosting before or immediately after the due date.

7. What About Other Services?

Other services may have their own expiration policies.

This can include:

• VPS servers

• Dedicated servers

• Business email

• SSL certificates

• Backup services

• Website maintenance plans

• Software licenses

• Other subscription-based services

The consequences of non-payment can include:

Due → Overdue → Suspension/Deactivation → Termination → Data or service loss

The exact timeline depends on the particular service.

8. Don't Wait Until the Final Day

The most important thing to remember is:

The longer you wait, the more difficult and expensive recovery can become.

For domains:

Renew before expiry → Normal renewal

Renew during grace → Usually normal renewal

Renew during redemption → Renewal + recovery/redemption fee

After redemption → Domain may be permanently lost

After release → Someone else can register the domain

Suppose:

Expiry date: 1 June

1 June

Domain expires.

1–30 June

Grace Period

You can still renew the domain at the normal renewal price.

After 30 June

Domain may enter Redemption.

You may still recover it, but an additional recovery/redemption fee may apply.

After Redemption

Domain enters Pending Delete.

Recovery is no longer normally possible.

After Pending Delete

Domain is released.

Anyone may register it.

Do not wait for your domain to expire before renewing it.

A domain name is an important part of your website, email and online identity. Once a domain reaches the final deletion stage, TrophyHost cannot guarantee its recovery or availability for re-registration.

If your domain has already expired, log in to your TrophyHost client area and renew it immediately.
